OPEN STUDIO: Valerie Norris (GB)

Die schottische Künstlerin Valerie Norris hat während ihrer Residenz bei der HALLE 14 eine Serie neuer, kleinformatiger Arbeiten, u.a. Collagen, Skulpturen, Gemälde und Texte, geschaffen, die sie im Rahmen des abschließenden Open Studios präsentierte.

In ihrer Residenzzeit in Leipzig nutzte Valerie Norris eine Reihe ortsspezifischer, gebrauchter Materialien und Fundstücke als Ausgangspunkt für ihre Ideen rund um Farbe, Sprache und Form. Dabei interessierte sie sich insbesondere für die Verwendung offener Strukturen, für Spiel und auch nicht-lineare Erzählstrukturen als Versuchsanordnung. Auf die spezifische Farbpalette von DDR-Design, auf literarische Strukturen und Aufzeichnungsformen bezugnehmend, erkundete sie in ihrer Arbeit Wahrnehmungsverschiebungen und Spannungen zwischen Realität und Vorstellungskraft.

Norris war die zweite von drei Stipendiatinnen eines vom British Council und Creative Scotland geförderten Künstleraustauschs zwischen dem Künstlerresidenzprogramm HospitalfieldArts (Arbroath, GB) und dem Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst HALLE 14 in Leipzig.

In der GruppenausstellungTrusted Time präsentiere HALLE 14 die Arbeiten aller schottischen Künstlerinnen, die in Leipzig zu Gast waren.

During her residency at HALLE 14, the Scottish artist Valerie Norris has created a series of new, small-scale works including collages, sculptures, paintings and short texts, which she will present at the concluding open studio.

Norris has used a set of site-specific, acquired materials and found objects as a starting point to look at ideas around colour, language and form. She is interested in employing open structures, play and non-linear narratives as processes for experimentation. Referencing the very specific colour palette of GDR design and alluding to literary structures and forms of notation, the work explores slippages in perception and the tension between reality and imagination.

Norris is the second of three Scottish artists to work at HALLE 14 in the framework of an artist-in-residence programme initiated by Hospitalfield Arts, Scotland and HALLE 14 and supported by British Council Germany and Creative Scotland.
