Live-Performance von/by Wen Yau (Künstlerin/artist, Hongkong)

Die aktuellen Proteste in Hongkong, bei denen Tausende von Menschen seit mehr als fünf Monaten beharrlich gegen die neugefassten Gesetze zur Auslieferung an China demonstrieren, haben die Welt aufgerüttelt. Die Proteste dehnten sich dabei auf das allgemeine Wahlrecht in Hongkong, den Machtmissbrauch der Polizei sowie auf Regierungsfehler und struktureller Gewalt aus. 

Die Künstlerin Wen Yau aus Hongkong entdeckte in den Nachrichten ein Transparent mit der Aufschrift »Wir sind das Volk!« aus Deutschland während der Proteste 1989, bevor die Berliner Mauer fiel. Hier gibt es eine Überschneidung zu der jüngsten führerlosen Demonstrationsbewegung in Hongkong, bei der ebenfalls der Slogan »We are the People!« geäußert wurde. Wen Yau promovierte mit einer ethnographischen Selbstbeschreibung über die Regenschirmbewegung (2014) und performativen Praktiken in Kunst und Aktivismus in Hongkong. Ihr kontinuierliches Engagement bei den Protesten in Hongkong veranlasst sie, über die Romantisierung der Friedlichen Revolution sowie über Individualität und Kollektivität in zivilen Kämpfen nachzudenken. 

Ihre Installation für die Ausstellung »Die Enden der Freiheit« (bis 7. Dezember 2019) zeigte aktuelle Plakate, Flyer und Videos, die Wen Yau in den letzten Monaten von Künstlern, Freunden und anderen Demonstranten gesammelt hat. Es ist ein Bild des unverwüstlichen und wendigen Widerstandsgeistes, das die Gestalt des Protests in Hongkong nachahmt. Am 7. November 2019 führte Wen Yau eine Performance in der Ausstellung mit Bezug auf die Montagsdemonstrationen in Leipzig 1989 und andere Aufstände an verschiedenen Orten der Welt auf. Dabei handelte es sich nicht nur um eine Hommage an friedliche Revolutionäre, sondern auch um eine Innenansicht der Dialektik von Militanz und Gewaltlosigkeit in Revolutionen mit Hinblick auf die Gefühle und Wünsche, die Wen Yau bei ihrer Teilnahme an sozialen Bewegungen erfahren hat.

The current protests in Hong Kong have stormed the world, as thousands of people have been persistently protesting for more than five months against the amended bills of extradition to Mainland China. Protests turned to target at universal suffrage in Hong Kong, the Police’s abuse of power as well as the issues of misgovernment and structural violence. 

Hong Kong artist Wen Yau discovered from news a banner displaying »Wir Sind das Volk!« in 1989 protest in Germany before the Berlin Wall fell. This coincides with the recent leaderless protests in Hong Kong voicing: »We are the People!« Wen Yau completed her PhD with an auto-ethnography on the Umbrella Movement (2014) and performative practices in Hong Kong art and activism. Her continuous engagement in the protests in Hong Kong leads her to reflect upon the romanticism of peaceful revolution as well as individuality and collectiveness in civil struggles. 

Her installation created for the current exhibition »The Ends of Freedom«(until December 7, 2019) gathers current posters, flyers and videos that Wen Yau has collected from artists, friends and other protesters in the past few months. It is a picture of the resilient and versatile spirit of resistance, simulating the display of such in Hong Kong protests. With reference to the Monday demonstrations in Leipzig in 1989, as well as other serial uprisings in different places around the world then, Wen Yau stages a performance in the exhibition on November 7, 2019. The performance was more than a tribute to peaceful revolutionaries, but also an introspection about the dialectics of militancy and non-violence in revolutions with regards to the emotions and desires Wen Yau experienced in her participation in social movements.
